A Final Farewell…

4502_519940473277_31601690_31089904_1347001_nOn Sunday, May 10th, Sheree and Laura celebrated their final day as L&C undergraduates. Sheree will be back on campus in the fall, attending Lewis & Clark grad school to earn her master’s degree in education. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology.  Laura is now returning home to Healdsburg, California for the summer, after earning her degree in sociology/anthropology with a minor in latin american studies.

Following the graduation ceremony, the seniors were joined by the athletics department, family and friends for one final celebration, as they leave Lewis & Clark and begin their new adventure. We would like to wish both Sheree and Laura the best of luck in their upcoming adventures.

Congratulations Sheree and Laura!

Sara Stars in French Play…

playOn April 1st and 2nd Sara showed off her theater skills when she starred in Lewis & Clark’s French Play in Fir Acres Theater here on campus. The play was a comedy called “On Purge Bebe”, written by Georges Feydeau. Sara played the frantic wife who wouldn’t stop obsessing about what she considers her daughter’s constipation.

And now, a quick summary, as provided by Sara:

M. Follavoine has just invented an unbreakable chamber pot (pot de chambre) that he intends to market for military use with the help of M. Chouilloux. Follavoine’s frantic wife strongly opposes the idea of her husband becoming known as the seller of chamber pots and would like for him instead to spend more time caring for their daughter, Mimi (or Bébé). Mimi, as it turns out, suffers from what her mother considers to be a serious case of constipation. Furthermore, she refuses to take her laxative (une purgation). A series of chaotic events emerges as everybody tries to persuade Mimi to take her medicine and as Follavoine tries to ignore this family crisis and continue with his business meeting. All the adults are busy with a new unexpected drama. Is someone a cuckold (un cocu)? Is he being cheated on by his wife? Meanwhile Mimi takes advantage of the situation in creative ways to recapture the attention of her mother in the final moments of a play you will love.

Congratulations on a stellar performance Sara!

Southern California…

cheeseThis last week we traveled down to southern California during Spring break to play Whittier, Occidental, and Cal Lutheran. We squeezed in 5 total games over just three days, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The team was exhausted by Friday, but we still managed to spend some time in the sun! :) Here are some of the pictures… check back for video of the trip!

First Day of Classes…

In between classes, France smiles for the camera.

The team is back in Portland for the New Year and the start of our season quickly approaches! Today is the first day of the 2009 spring semester, as all of the players were challenged with the task of early rising this morning. After having an entire month break from school, I am sure the team is very anxious to get back in the classroom for those lectures and tests.

Our official spring practices will begin bright and early on Monday morning, January 26. Check back with us to see pictures and recaps of our first week of practice…

Let It Snow…

The Manor House - Lewis & Clark College

The Manor House - Lewis & Clark College

Everyone has returned home for the Winter break, as finals and classes finished on Wednesday, December 17 . The final week of the term was an unusual one, with snow falling almost all week long. In the past week we have received several inches, causing the campus to be closed on Monday and Wednesday. But, something tells me the team was not too upset about their finals being cancelled or taken from home! :)

When the team returns from their Winter break in mid-January, we will pick-up with our Spring training. Our first official practice of the season is scheduled for February.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday!

Softball Players Switch Roles for the Winter…

sqmichaela

Four of our players, Michaela Satter, Kim Kittell, Kelly Vega, and Caitlin Relyea, are putting in double-duties this year, showing off their talents on the basketball court while softball is in the off-season. Immediately after practices finished in the fall, these women switched gears, stepping off the softball diamond and into the basketball gym. In March, when these four talented women finish their basketball season, they will make that transition yet again, hanging up their basketball shoes and jumping back into their cleits for the 2009 season.

Team Helps With Fall Carnival

Jennifer, Jessica, Sheree, and FranceThe team participated in the Fall Carnival on Sunday, November 23, hosted by Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Our SAAC reps, Jamie and Sheree, helped to organize and set-up for the event held in the tennis dome. The event, which benefitted young children in the community, called for the donation of canned foods that were then donated to the Oregon Food Bank.

The softball team setup a face-painting booth. There were all kinds of games and prizes for the kids, including bobbing for apples, pie eating contests, fish tosses, relay races, and putting contests.  The event was a blast for all of the kids that attended, and our players had a lot of fun with it.

Student Athletic Trainers in Action

img_3122

Aside from their busy school and softball schedules, four of our players also find time to log hours in the training room as student athletic trainers. Michaela, Jess, Jennifer, and Sheree are all members of the athletic training staff. This job is available to students who have passed the Athletic Training Course offered every Spring, taught by our Head Athletic Trainer, Mark “Petie” Pietrok.

As student trainers, their duties include but are not limited to: administering treatment to athletes, taping ankles, wrists and fingers, and updating electronic treatment records. Aside from putting in time in the training room, the student trainers also gain experience in the field, where they are able to observe the evaluations of injuries occurring during various sporting activities.

We are very proud of our student athletic trainers! Keep up the good work.

Coach Jepsen a successful multi-tasker

Coach Jepsen has been carrying double duties for the Lewis & Clark Athletics Department for two seasons now. As the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach, her team has made tremendous strides during the 2008 season, and are currently in 3rd place in the NWC with a conference record of 9-4.

Involvement in two sports, as a coach or player, is great for the athletics community as a whole, promoting a greater sense of school pride and support between teams. Coach Jepsen has been experiencing a great deal of that support from the softball and women’s basketball teams this season. The ladies sit front and center, dressed in bright orange Lewis & Clark volleyball jerseys from the mid-90’s, cheering for their fellow pioneers.

We are all cheering for Coach Jepsen and the pioneer volleyball players as they finish out their season.

The Scavenger Hunt

The basketball and softball teams joined this afternoon to have an intra-team video scavenger hunt challenge on campus. The players were partnered in teams of 4-5 from their respective team.   Each team carried along a digital video camera and a list of challenges to carry out and objects to obtain within a 60 minute time period. The tasks varied in difficulty, and the more difficult the task, the more points awarded. To give you an idea of how much fun it was, some of the tasks on their list included performing a movie scene on the theatre stage; playing duck, duck, goose on the grassy knoll; finding a professor and serenading him/her with their favorite song; and even finding/bringing back a prom dress. It was a great time for everyone and it gave the players a chance to do some team bonding and meet new people. We compiled their videos into a short movie… Check it out for some good laughs.

Fall Ball Finished

We are now done with practices for the 2008 fall-ball season.  We’ve spent 12 days over the past few weeks getting to know each other, teaching fundamentals, and beginning our strength and conditioning program. We are now in our fall off-season and our players will continue working hard on their owe honing their softball skills and building off of the momentum we have established this fall.

Our coaching staff is extremely excited about this year’s team.  The returning players and incoming are striving to accomplish our team goals and continue to raise team expectations!

Check back to see what the girls are doing in their off season.
